Leveraging access to the blood supply and blood donors, the REDS-IV-P program began conducting the RESPONSE study (REDS-IV-P Epidemiology, Surveillance and Preparedness of the Novel SARS-CoV-2 Epidemic) in early 2020 in order to 1) evaluate if SARS-CoV-2 RNA was found in blood donations in the U.S.
This project, led by the REDS-IV-P Center for Transfusion Laboratory Studies (Vitalant Research Institute, VRI), represents a collaboration between REDS-IV-P investigators and several blood collection organizations including the American Red Cross (ARC), Bloodworks Northwest (BWNW), New York Blood Center (NYBC), and Vitalant.Three of these blood organizations (ARC, NYBC, and Vitalant) are enrolling subjects into the longitudinal cohort study and ARC is tracking rates of PDI reports over time. Now in its fourth phase, the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-IV-Pediatric (REDS-IV-P) program aims primarily at improving the benefits of transfusion while reducing its risks; the REDS program also has a new focus on previously understudied populations.The data compiled in REDS-IV-P will allow investigators to rapidly address key research questions in transfusion medicine and inform blood policy decisions, for adults as well as for children and other understudied patient populations.The U.S. component of the REDS-IV-P program has four research hubs. Each hub has a blood center and offers transfusion services to support health care and community hospitals. Since the 2021 proposal, the binding renewable target has been raised to a 42.5% RES share in 2030 as part of the RePower EU Package (RED IV).To help deliver on the EU’s increasing climate ambitions, including the EU-wide 55% emissions reduction target by 2030 and the target to achieve net neutrality by 2050, the targets set by the RED have been repeatedly increased. As a result, the RED has evolved from RED I to its latest version, RED IV.The Renewable Energy Directive (RED) aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources within the EU’s final energy consumption.The Directive is particularly relevant for bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), as it regulates the use of biomass and biofuels for energy generation, affecting the feasibility of introducing BECCS in the EU, and its potential scale. The European Commission wants to bridge the time until the revised Renewable Energy Directive RED IV has been passed and translated into national law, partly by improving conditions for PV systems up to 50 KW in size.
However, it will still take a while before the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED IV), which is part of the REPowerEU package, is passed and implemented into national law across the member states. Therefore, the commission has drawn up a proposal to simplify the approval process and bridge this period, although the draft has yet to be officially published.
